History of Cerevisia

Different associations :

L’Association Royale des Anciens Etudiants de l’Institut Supérieur des Fermentation de Gand, and de Afdelingen Brouwerij-Gistingsbedrijven en Biotechnologie van de Industriële Hogeschool van het Gemeenschaponderwijs CTL in Gent  L’Association Royale des Anciens Etudiants en brasserie de l’Université Catholique de Louvain and de Koninklijke Vereniging van de oud-Studenttenbond in Brouwerij van de Katholieke Universiteit  van Leuven L’Association Royale des Anciens Etudiants en Brasserie de l’Institut des Industries de Fermentation de Bruxelles (CERIA) , And later , De  Oudstudentbond Afdeling Brouwerij van het Hoger Instituut ST-Lieven te Gent en de Oud – Studentenbond Afdeling Biochemie van het KIHO te Gent which each had their own magazine, signed an new agreement after a previous one signed in
1978 in order to publish a scientific and technological magazine named CEREVISIA mainly addressed to  their members  and written in French, Dutch and English.Hereafter, you will find the editorial published in the first release of CEREVISIA in 1976 and jointly signed by the presidents in charge at that time.

  Editorial / Cerevisia N°1-1976 :

Dear alumni

You have in your hands the first release of your magazine (new look) and as, you can see, we redesigned it; it is no more the same.

Its name is certainly not a surprise for you; you are a brewer , it is familiar. But perhaps you will find that this major change is irritating, even else inappropriate?
You are right and you need some explanations.

It is the reason why Emile Moortgat, Claude Tonnoir and André De Schepper , the Presidents are addressing these explanations.

Each association was facing the following issues :
  1. Decrease of members paying their subscription.
  2. Significant increase of the publication and release of the magazine
  3. Decrease of the advertisements number due to the merger or disappearing of companies interested to put ads in our magazine.
  4. Difficulty to find enough high scientific articles oriented innovative research.
  5. Articles have to be written in our two national languages with summary in English.

For all these reasons, the publication of their  Bulletins are becoming a too important financial charge for your associations.

This is why your presidents together have decided to find a solution and to stop the publication of the Bulletins on a short term basis.

After lots of meetings and hours of discussion, an important decision has been taken : each association would work with the others and would combine the resources in order to publish a magazine worthy of them and their schools : CEREVISIA.

It was clearly the best way to continue what our predecessors had created,  continue to offer to Masters and Researchers the opportunity to publish their works and maintain the contact with the alumni graduates worldwide keeping the integrity of each association.

This is the mindset which led the deliberations and then where written the status of a new association created by the three founder associations with as objectives :

  1. Publish a scientifical and technological magazine, at least bilingual, called CEREVISIA
  2. Be interested by the progresses of the “fermentation” industries and all other industries or activities related to the biochemical teaching.

The Administrative Board is made up of nine members, three of each founder association.

This board is helped by a Management Committee and a scientifical Committee, the first one being in charge of secretary and invoicing activities, choice of publications, advertising ,and the second one of redaction of the abstracts  and choice of the scientific articles (agreement or disagreement).

From now, the Bulletins A.R.E.B.U.L., FERMENTATIO from the “Association Royale des Anciens de l’Institut Supérieur des Fermentations de Gand and the B.I.F” “des Anciens de l’A.F.B. – CERIA”  will no longer be published.

Your presidents think that it is their duty to pay their tribute to the persons who have contributed, during tenths of years, to release these magazines and promote our schools outside the borders of our country.

And your Presidents are requesting the support of all of you to help to the success of CEREVISIA which, we are sure, will continue to increase the reputation of our Belgian brewery schools, their teachers, their researchers.

Good luck and long life to “CEREVISIA”

E. Moortgat                            A. De Schepper                     C. Tonnoir

This magazine was directly also available to the sympathiser members and to each individual or company interested to take out a subscription ; the cost had to be agreed by the founder associations.

Each association has the ownership of the magazine and shares the management responsibility thru a Committee (13 people) : 3 from each association including the editorial secretary and a management secretary.

Decisions are based on the majority .

To help the editorial staff, a scientific Committee is now responsible to collect and review with the Executive  Committee the articles to be published.

An internal chart defines too the functioning rules.

Since its creation, the name of the magazine has changed from CEREVISIA to CEREVISIA and Biotechnology in 1995 and finally in CEREVISIA – Belgian Journal of Brewing and Biotechnology in 1995.

Distribution mainly in Belgium is also worldwide.
